It’s no question that podcasting is HUGE, and 2020 was a GREAT year to get started! Podcasts are an incredible platform for conversations, idea sharing, and self-expression. If you have a podcast, you have an opportunity for a totally unique social media presence. When you are focused on your one medium (audio), it may be hard to imagine your content on other platforms. I’m here to walk you through the many possibilities.
The 5 Pillars of Content
There are five main types of content that every podcaster (or business) should consider sharing on social media.
Promotional Content
I’m sure you as a podcaster know already that you should be promoting your podcast on social media. But in CASE you didn’t, I’m here to remind you: tell people where to listen, how to find you, how to learn more, and how to sign up for updates.
Engaging Content
Don’t forget that social media is meant to be social. Where a podcast is more of a one-way transaction, social media is a place for conversation and connection. Pose questions to your audience. Invite them into the conversation: what do they think about the topic of your recent episode?
Community Content
It’s important to show that you don’t live in an echo chamber of your own voice. Podcasting is a huge community! Show that you are a part of that community. Shout out other podcasts, give an update on a recent guest, or share what you are learning from others.
Educational Content
This pillar can vary widely based on your topic. If your podcast is educational, you’ll have tons of info to choose from. Sum up an episode’s main points, share a gold nugget quote, or go into depth about a topic you recently covered.
If your podcast is more entertaining or opinion-based, you can get creative with this pillar, or use it a little less. Maybe you can teach your audience how you do what you do, and how they can, too.
Entertaining Content
Don’t forget to show your personality and humanity through your social media. Your entertaining content gets to be less rigid and structured. Tell a story, show behind the scenes, or lighten the mood. Show something about yourself that is less related to your topic but very related to who you are. Allowing your audience to get to know you is how you encourage them to become your super fans- they will be shouting your name from the rooftops, because they think you’re so great!
These are the 5 Pillars of Content that ANY brand can use on social media. Now I want to go into a little more detail about how I break down content ideas just for podcasters.
Social Media Content Topics for Podcasters
Here are the 3 things I like to touch on, when I plan out social media for podcasts.
The Podcast itself
Talk about your podcast. I know, it’s a little obvious, but it’s important. Talk about how you got started, show behind the scenes, and expand on your topic and why you chose it.
Each Episode
You can get a ton of content ideas just from one episode. Tease an upcoming episode, announce the latest episode, share a quote, share another quote, create an audiogram, and share more quotes.
The People
Talk about yourself, your co-hosts, your guests, and your audience. All of these people are necessary to your podcast existing in the world. Again, this shows your humanity and encourages genuine connection. Introduce your guest, introduce yourself, ask your audience about themselves, share a review, and ask for support.

Do I really need to tell them that again?
There will come a point in planning your social media where you’ll say to yourself “I literally just posted about this a couple weeks ago. Do I really need to share that again?”
The answer is yes!
Think about it. Not everyone is on social media every hour of the day. Not everyone in your audience sees everything you post. And not everyone remembers everything you said. Also, people often need to be told things several times before they act on them. So it’s ok to repeat yourself. It’s ok (and encouraged) to share about your latest episode many times, in many places, in many ways. It’s ok (and encouraged) to share about yourself, ask for support, and tell your audience where to listen on a regular basis.
